About Dr Shomik Sengupta

Dr Sengupta is a urologist practising in Melbourne, Australia, with a specific interest in urologic oncology (i.e.the treatment of cancer of the prostate, bladder and kidney)

Dr Sengupta trained in urology under the Victorian section of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ), obtaining Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Subsequently, he undertook a further two years of training in Urologic Oncology (certified by the Society of Urologic Oncology) at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in the USA.

Dr Sengupta has had the unique priviledge of training in robotic prostatectomy during his fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, working with Dr Matthew Gettman, one of the pioneers of robotic surgery in the USA. Further to this, Dr Sengupta continues to attend workshops and seminars in robotic surgery in order to keep up with latest developments. Dr Sengupta has used his expertise to mentor other colleagues who are beginning robotic surgery.

Dr Sengupta takes a comprehensive approach to prostate cancer, providing not only robotic prostatectomy, but also open radical prostatectomy and brachytherapy. He will carefully assess and advise each patient of their best treatment option. In his capacity as Visiting Medical Officer at the Austin Hospital, Dr Sengupta participates in weekly uro-oncology multidisciplinary team meetings. If required, he will obtain advice on your case from other specialists at this meeting.

Dr Sengupta believes strongly in research and education as tools to use against prostate cancer. He has published widely on prostate cancer and other urologic topics (Dr Sengupta's publications). He is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer (ANZUP) Trials Group, and thus involved in clinical trials such as the RAVES trial of adjuvant radiotherapy following prostatectomy.

Dr Sengupta is currently the chairman of the Urologic Cancer Committe of the Victorian Co-operative Oncology Group, a body which initiates and contributes to cancer research and the implementation of cancer programs and services.

Surgical services

Mr Sengupta carries out surgery at the Epworth Freemasons Hospital, Epworth Eastern Hospital, Waverley Private Hospital and John Fawkner Hospital. Surgery can usually be booked within a week or two of initial consultation. At present robotic surgery is only available at a limited number of hospitals - Dr Sengupta undertakes robotic surgery at the Epworth Freemasons Hospital and the Epworth Eastern hospital.
